4th of July

Independence Day

United We Stand, One Nation,
Under God, Indivisible

PLANNING THE PERFECT PATRIOTIC PARTY

Make crafty flag invitations, and invite your friends, family and neighbors over to celebrate 4th of July and this great county.

Flag Invitations
Set a patriotic theme for your party with easy, homemade invitations. Have your kids use crayons and markers to turn index cards into American flags. Draw stars and stripes on the lined side and on the other put the date, time, location, and phone number, plus what each family should bring. Tape or glue each card onto a Popsicle stick or straw to make mini flags.

Party Suggestions
Consider a potluck supper to break up the responsibility of the meal. Assign dishes to each family, asking them to bring enough for their family, plus a family of four. Everyone brings their own drinks and a red, white and blue dessert to share.

PATRIOTIC CRAFTS, GAMES AND ACTIVITIES FOR A FUN FILLED DAY

Crafts
You kids will have a great time making these fun craft a few days before the party, or you can do them at the party for a fun activity to keep the kids busy.

Craft Kits

Oriental Trading Company has 23 patriotic crafts that willl keep the kids entertained, including this waving flag door hanger, a partiotic necklace, Uncle Sam Wreath and so many more, all priced from $2.95 to $11.95.

Flags, Flags, Flags
Make flags of all sizes using note cards, poster board, construction paper, markers, crayons and/or paints and sticks or dowels) to decorate your home and back yard.

Rattle Rouser
Make a joyful noise with homemade Liberty Bell shakers. To make one, fill a cardboard tissue tube with about a dozen small bells (sold at craft or party stores). Then seal the tube by taping 1 1/2-inch-wide cardboard circles to the ends. Next, cut a 6- x 20-inch rectangle from a clear report folder or clear acetate (sold at art supply stores) and fringe the 6-inch edges by making a series of 8-inch-long cuts (a parent's job). Attach sticker stars to the fringe. Wrap the rectangle around the tube so that the fringe extends from the ends and secure it with the tape. Then your child can decorate the shaker with colored tape stripes and more sticker stars.

Uncle Sam's Hat
To create an Uncle Sam's Hat, cut a rectangle from a piece of red poster board (roughly 12 inches high by 9 inches wide). Using a ruler and an X-Acto knife (a parent's job), make six
vertical slits in the poster board at least 1 inch apart, then weave in a piece of white paper. Cut a band, roughly 3 by 12 inches, from blue construction paper and glue on three white paper stars. Glue the decorated band to the bottom of the woven poster board. Finally, cut another band from the poster board that's long enough to fit around a child's head. Staple (end points out) the band to the inside bottom of the hat. Wrap it around the child's head and then secure it with tape, a staple or a paper clip.

Statue Of Liberty Crown
Celebrate this Fourth of July Ellis Island style with a Statue of Liberty headband. First, cut 2 1/2 inches from each of the bottom rims of two sturdy paper plates, then cut out their centers, leaving a 2-inch-wide headband (this fits most children's heads snugly, but
if it's too tight, carefully trim more away from the edge). Next, cut six triangles from green construction paper. Each one should measure 4 inches across and 9 inches high. Space these evenly across the front of one headband with the points radiating outward and staple
into place. Glue the other headband across the first to conceal the staples. Fashion a torch out of a toilet-paper tube, poster board and yellow tissue paper. Touch up both to look like Ms. Liberty's crown and torch. Paint them green, then "oxidize" with glitter.

RACES AND CONTESTS

Ring Toss
For this game, contestants need the tossing skills of a Frisbee player and the good aim of a seasoned horseshoe pitcher. For the scoring poles, you'll need nine dowels. Set them in the ground in three rows, each composed of three dowels and spaced 2 feet apart. Decorate the planted poles by wrapping them with red, white and blue crepe-paper streamers.

During the game, members from both teams have three attempts each to toss a ring around one of the poles. (It's fun to alternate turns between the two teams.) Kids should be allowed to stand a little closer to the poles than their adult teammates. A ring that lands around a pole in the nearest row is worth 10 points; a ringer in the middle row earns 20 points; and a ringer in the far row earns 30 points. The team that accumulates the most points wins.

Sack Race
There is nothing like a good sack race with burlap bags.

A FEAST FOR A CROWD

If your will be having a large party, the best way to feed the crowd is by planning a potluck. You may want to divide the guest list into three groups, assigning salads and casseroles
to one, desserts to another and beverages to the third. If a grill or barbecue pit is available at the picnic site, suggest that each family bring its own chicken, hamburgers or hot dogs, as well.
